Sustainability

The significant problems of deforestation and global warming have caused end users of timber in the developed world to look increasingly to establishing more formal measurable benchmarks of sustainability. In response to these growing trends, the FSC was established as an independent, non–governmental, not for profit organisation to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

FSC is a certification system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organisations, and communities interested in responsible forestry. It is represented in more than 50 countries around the world and consists of a diverse group of representatives from environmental and social groups, the timber trade and the forestry profession, indigenous people's organisations, responsible corporations, community forestry groups and forest product certification organisations from around the world.

The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.
FSC certification supports the conservation and long-term maintenance of forests so that they are permanently maintained and managed in a socially and environmentally responsible way.

FSC certified timber does not include raw material from damaging forestry practices or forest conversions which lead to carbon emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and forest fires.

Vizara sustainability is best evidenced by its 130 year history as a rubber estate. However, recognizing the need for a formal sustainability standard in forestry management, Vizara has committed itself to obtaining FSC approval for both its rubber producing and timber processing operations. A preliminary audit has been successfully completed and Vizara is now in the final preparatory process for formal FSC audit and certification.

Once certified Vizara will be Malawi’s only FSC approved company, which will be another milestone in its long history.
